It's not important except to keep track of how much film you have left and the camera works without it. Do you mean the advance wheel? The advance wheel is the black plastic wheel and it should be stopping on its own at the end of each frame, that's how you keep photos from overlapping. If you don't let it reach the stopping point and cock the shutter, it will overlap/double expose. I usually forget or it gets knocked off the correct count at some point later, but as long as you keep winding until it stops you for the next frame, there shouldn't be overlap. So. I miss having complete control over the exposure settings. I also think that the lenses are superior to the ones in the small, pocket-sized cameras.
